120-Day Re-Assessment Plan
Site Visits
2.1 Purpose
The purpose of the site visits to the selected airports was to determine, by way of user input, whether the ASOS was performing as designed and meeting user needs. Specifically, how accurately the ASOS reflected actual weather conditions and transmitted aviation weather data to users, and how well the ASOS met the Service Standards as established by the FAA, industry, and user groups. Site locations were selected by using a problem identification process based on congressional inquiries, user comments, FAA regional input, and/or a history of specific concerns.
Two teams made up of representatives from FAA Headquarters, the applicable FAA Regional Offices, and NWS visited selected sites as part of the re-assessment. Representatives from the ASOS manufacturer and the DoD accompanied the teams on several site visits.
These visits were fact-finding missions. Data, issues, comments, and complaints received at the site visit meetings were included in trip reports. A trip report on every site visited by the team is included in Section 2. The reports consist of background information on the airport, a synopsis of the comments made by the users of the airport to the team, and a summary of the information provided by the team to the users. Each trip report concludes by identifying the issues that were specific to that particular site.
2.2 Identification of Sites
Table 2.2-1 lists the sites visited, the dates the sites were visited, and the paragraph numbers in Section 2 where the trip reports on each site are located. Figure 2.2-1 shows the locations of the ASOSs selected for site visits.
