Precision Runway Monitor (PRM)
SUMMARY: PRM will provide the capability to conduct simultaneous independent
indtrument flight rules (IFR) approaches to parallel runways spaced less than 4300 feet
apart, thus increasing airport throughput, reducing delays, and providing fuel savings.
Based on Congressional direction, the prototype radar at Raleigh-Durham was upgraded and
commissioned. In addition, a production contract for manufacture and installation of 5
E-scan radars was awarded to Allied
Signal Inc.
Mode S
SUMMARY: Mode S replaces the existing air traffic control radar beacon system
(ATCRBS) providing enhanced surveillance information for use by Air Traffic Control
automation. The Mode S provides more accurate position information and minimizes
interference by discreet interrogation of each aircraft. Through this ability to address
each aircraft individually, Mode S provides the medium for a digital data link. This data
link will be used to exchange information between aircraft and various ATC functions and
weather databases. These systems were produced by a joint venture between Westinghouse
(now Northrop Grumman Corporation)
and Unisys.
ATCRBS
SUMMARY: Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS) Relocate - This program
provides for the relocation of the newer ATCBI-4/5 systems available as a result of Mode S
installations to locations with new requirements for Beacon systems and to sites which
presently use the older vacuum tube-type (ATCBI-3s). It also provides for the disposal of
the ATCBI-3s and provisions for Radar Beacon Performance Monitors (RBPMs) at 25-30 ATCBI
locations where shortages exist. The contractor for this program is Raytheon Corporation.
ATCBI
SUMMARY: Air Traffic Control Beacon Interrogator (ATCBI) Replace - This program will
replace aging ATCBI equipment (ATCBI-4/5) at up to 200 operational sites to maintain
ground surveillance and decrease supportability costs. This equipment is becoming
difficult to maintain due to its age. The contractor for this effort is TBD. (See ATCBI Replacement Program (ATCBI-6))
