Non-Premium War Risk Insurance

BACKGROUND

The Secretary of Transportation may provide the insurance without premium, if the Secretary of Defense or the head of a Department, Agency, or instrumentality of the U.S. Government agrees to indemnify the Secretary of Transportation against all losses covered by the insurance. The insurance is available to CRAF participants and other air carriers flying under U.S. Government contracts.

UPDATE ON FAA NON-PREMIUM WAR RISK INSURANCE

In February 2003, at the request of the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aviation Insurance Program Office began providing non-premium war risk hull loss, and passenger, and third party liability insurance to U.S. air carriers flying under contract to the Department of Defense in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and the U.S. Central Command. This insurance has continued on an annual basis and is currently in effect until September 31, 2010.
