How to Apply
FAA has an online employment application system called ASAP. When air traffic controller specialist and other FAA jobs are open, they are listed on the FAA Career Opportunities page. All applicants must use this system to apply for air traffic controller specialist positions.
Path 1 Applicants
Those with prior experience as an air traffic controller:
- Go to Career Opportunities
- Search for a vacancy announcement for "Air Traffic Control Specialist Trainee" or "Air Traffic Control Specialist." (look for the acronyms "RMC", "VRA", or "REINST.") You can apply for either of these positions, but the pay and responsibilities of each are different. Please read the full vacancy announcements for more information.
- Open an ASAP account and apply online for those announcements
- If you do not see an air traffic control specialist trainee or air traffic control specialist vacancy announcement, then periodically check the website
Paths 2 & 3 Applicants
Those with no prior air traffic control experience and those who want to enroll in an Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative Program (AT-CTI):
- Go to Career Opportunities
- Search for a vacancy announcement for "Air Traffic Control Specialist Trainee." This is the only kind of air traffic controller position to which you can apply. Note: Some announcements will indicate only AT-CTI graduates may apply. Please read the full vacancy announcements for more information.
- Open an ASAP account and apply online for those announcements
- If you do not see an air traffic control specialist trainee vacancy announcement, then periodically check the website
