After being delayed by weather, The Boeing Company successfully launched a Delta II on 27 March 1998 at 0602 UTC. The Delta II, launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, carried five IRIDIUM satellites to low earth orbit. The completed IRIDIUM system will consist of 66 spacecraft and will be a satellite-based, worldwide cellular phone network. Currently, 58 satellites have been launched.
