Filing Instructions Overview
This section describes general flight plan filing guidance, and interface requirements for sending electronic-format flight plan messages via Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) to FAA en route automation systems. Audiences for this information are:
- Flight Plan Filers (FPF) - any entity which files electronic flight plans directly with FAA via AFTN
- Pilots - basic information to have available when filing a flight plan through a flight plan filer
FAA is working with other Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP) to increase international standardization by using International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) compliant flight data. This effort will also harmonize flight planning in the North American region with our neighboring ANSPs to the north and south.
