University of Alaska Aviation Technology Division, Anchorage, Alaska

The SBS WSA office has been working with University of Alaska’s Aviation Technology Division in Anchorage for many years to provide ADS-B awareness programs, training, and equipage options.

These efforts include:
  • ADS-B training and outreach products for national use.
  • ADS-B training on the installation, maintenance, and operation of ADS-B equipment.
  • ADS-B training programs for pilots, including the Chelton 6.0 Bravo Software Update Training in Southeast Alaska.
  • Training materials for ADS-B-related technologies, such as Global Positioning Systems, Multifunction Displays, Cockpit Display of Traffic Information, Primary Flight Display, and Instrument Display Unit.
  • Presenting outreach briefings, such as at the Allied Business and Aviation Conference in Ethiopia; the Canadian Aviation Safety Seminar in Vancouver, California; the Aviation North Expo in Fairbanks, Alaska; the US/Canada Cross Border Conference; and Helicopter Association International HeliExpo.

Avionics Training

Working for the FAA, the University of Alaska developed the FAA-approved training program for avionics installed in phase I and II Capstone Project aircraft, and FAA Industry Training Standards (FITS) training for ADS-B and Cockpit Display of Traffic Information, as well as other aspects of TAA (Technologically Advanced Aircraft) training.

The university will make training available on a regular basis for FAR Part 91 pilots and will provide “train-the-trainer” training for commercial operators. Training also will be available for use by flight schools and other training agencies, which will be given materials and “train-the-trainer” training.
