GPS Policy - Joint Program Office

Policy

The management and operation of the Global Positioning System involves the support of several organizations, including the Joint Program Office (JPO). The JPO Air Force Space Command through the fourteenth Air Force manages the generation and employment of space forces to support U.S. Space Command. In support of the Air Force Space Command, the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) at Los Angeles AFB, California, designs and acquires the GPS space systems. The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System joint program office (JPO) is the specific organization responsible for this acquisition. It oversees launches, completes on-orbit checkouts, and then transfers systems over to the USAF Space Command for operation. From that point, the Space Warfare Center (SWC) at Schriever AFB, Colorado plays a major role in fully integrating space systems into the operational Air Force. From that point, the 2nd Space Operations Squadron operates and maintains the GPS constellation and the ground support systems.

The FAA provides a representative to the JPO staff and supports GPS modernization by ensuring that civil aviation requirements are fully represented in their deliberations.
