William J. Hughes Technical Center

Environmental Policy
Date: February 01, 2007

The FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center (Technical Center) is committed to excellence and leadership in protecting the environment, and the health and safety of its employees, customers and neighbors. In keeping with this commitment, the Technical Center will provide products and services and otherwise conduct operations so as to avoid harmful human exposures, conserve energy and resources, and minimize the use of ecologically detrimental materials. This commitment extends to all Technical Center operations and will be implemented and given effect through an Environmental Management System (EMS). An EMS is a systematic approach to insure that environmental considerations are well managed by an organization. The emphasis is on continual improvement rather than crisis
management.

The Technical Center's EMS framework is designed to achieve the following results:
· Pollution Prevention
The Technical Center will first seek to cost effectively avoid the creation of pollution and waste from processes and operations, and second to manage remaining waste through safe and responsible methods and vendors.
· Regulatory Compliance
The Technical Center will identify, evaluate and comply with all environmental laws, regulations.
· Self Assessment
The Technical Center will conduct thorough audits and self-assessments of compliance with regulations and with this policy, measure progress against the requirements of the environmental management system, its objectives, targets and other performance indicators. As part of the Technical Center's EMS, objectives and targets will be reviewed annually and performance against objectives and targets will be reported on semi-annually at management reviews.
· Responsible Neighbor
The Technical Center will be an environmentally responsible neighbor in its community and will act quickly and responsibly to correct incidents or conditions that endanger health, safety, or the environment.
· Ecology, Habitats, Endangered Species
The Technical Center will be attentive in its operations and activities to avoid unnecessary harm to threatened species; endangered species, rare species, natural habitats and ecologically sensitive areas.
· Responsible Partnerships
The Technical Center will work with its partners to address mutual environmental concerns and will encourage suppliers and contractors to comply with similar environmental protection policies.
· Communication
The Technical Center will communicate this policy to all employees, make it available to the public and unions, and establish procedures to receive and respond to inquiries from external interested parties. It is incumbent on all Technical Center personnel to give effect to this policy by adhering to the letter and spirit of the above commitments and by demonstrating good faith and competence in the execution of preventive and corrective environmental programs that seek potentially exposed persons as well as the natural resources.
