In Fiscal Year 2009, the Office of International Aviation (API) increased its focus on promoting NextGen activities internationally. The organization has been working closely with the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO), the NextGen Implementation & Integration Office, and the NextGen Program Offices to gain a greater understanding of the future systems and their impacts both domestically and abroad. This collaboration has allowed us to design and deliver educational material to the API workforce both at Headquarters and overseas. This material will also be used for the general FAA population. This effort will support API's mission by preparing the Senior Representatives for discussions at all levels regarding NextGen with their counterparts.

The API NextGen team has:

  • Led a multi-agency study team in updating the International Strategy document for the JPDO.
  • Participated in the development of a global harmonization roadmap.
  • Developed high level overview briefings for the JPDO library.
  • Supported the development of a revised Concept of Operations.
  • Helped to further policy issues at the JPDO.
  • Provided one-on-one briefings to the regional directors, senior representatives and support staff.
  • Developed detailed program briefings that will be bound into a single book and distributed throughout the agency as an educational tool.
  • Developed a compilation disk containing videos about NextGen and the specific programs that support it.
  • Designed new informational kiosks that will be used throughout the world to distribute information about NextGen and the International Aviation office.
  • Began the process of building educational electronic learning modules for API staff that will utilize the agency's Learning Management System (eLMS).

API is dedicated to supporting FAA's goal of evolving from a ground-based system of air traffic control to a satellite-based system of air traffic management. This ongoing effort is supported by a highly seasoned staff in Washington, DC, and over 15 representatives located in countries around the world. As NextGen continues to grow, the API staff will continue to seek the most current information available and deliver it to our international partners in an effort to harmonize global interoperability and standards.
