Visual charting and airport mapping.

The Visual Charting and Airport Mapping (VCAM) Group provides high quality, accurate and useful Visual Flight Rule (VFR) products; and innovative Airport Mapping products and publications necessary for safe navigation in the Nation's airspace. VCAM, as part of the Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) Organization, has a strong customer focus with a keen interest in efficiency, and operates as a High Performing Organization. VCAMs strategic plan and operational goals are in accordance with the FAA Technical Operations/Aviation System Standards Operations Plans, and the FAA Flight Plan

VCAM produces a wide range of aeronautical charts and related products at multiple scales that are used for flight navigation and planning under Visual Flight Rule (VFR) conditions. The particular types of charts produced for the VFR environment are:

VCAM also produces Airport Mapping and Supplementary Publications that contain data on public use and joint use airports, seaplane bases, heliports, airport diagrams, airport sketches, navigational aids, weather data sources, airspace, and operational procedures. Those publications include:

In addition, VCAM produces a valuable briefing and training tool for use in all types of flight (VFR, IFR, Terminal, Arrival and Departure, and Planning). That product is known as:

VCAM is also planning for the future by considering new products for VFR flight, and the Airport Mapping function of VCAM will be expanded in the future to include:

  • geo-referenced airport maps for each airport facility
  • construction of airport diagrams all Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP) airports,
  • airport mapping for VFR airports meeting select criteria, and
  • state-of-the-art support for future cockpit displays systems, surface mapping, and moving map requirements to help reduce runway incursions.
