Wake turbulence is caused by a pair of counter rotating vortices trailing from the wing tips of an aircraft in flight. Vortices from large aircraft pose problems to smaller encountering aircraft. Turbulence generated within the vortices, if encountered at close range, can damage aircraft components and equipment and cause personal injuries.

The CSTA for Wake Turbulence contributes to workforce education and research, provides technical advice to government agencies, industry and academia, and supports operation and accident/incident investigations.
