Young Innovators Awarded for Real-Life Aviation Solutions

July 18, 2013 – From hybrid-electric aircraft to photochromic glass beads on the runway, the FAA yesterday saw its future in the winning ideas from students across the nation at the seventh annual Design Competition for Universities Award Ceremony, held at FAA Headquarters.

College and university students were invited to propose ideas in four technical challenge areas – airport operations and maintenance; runway safety; airport environmental interactions; and airport management and planning.

First place awards in each of the categories went to student teams from Binghamton University-State University of New York, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach, George Mason University, the University of Virginia, and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
