South Suburban Airport
The State of Illinois continues to work on plans for the potential establishment of a South Suburban Airport (SSA) that will be located near Peotone, IL. At the same time, the FAA is in the early stages of an environmental analysis of this proposed airport. Based on FAA site approval granted in 2002, the State has been acquiring land to preserve the option of developing an inaugural airport (approximately 1,800 acres to date), and it is focused on initial establishment of a one runway inaugural airport with the capability to expand to accommodate future market demand. Currently, the State has submitted an Alternatives Analysis report to the FAA and it is working with the FAA on its Airport Layout Plan. Once the FAA receives and Airport Layout Plan from the State, it can determine a schedule for the completion of its environmental analysis.
