The Automated Radar Terminal System (ARTS) program has replaced aging air traffic automation systems at hundreds of Terminal Radar Approach Control facilities, or TRACONs. System features include:

  • Modern hardware
  • Flexible system architecture
  • The ability to process 256 simultaneous tracks per sensor
  • Implementation of Mode C Intruder alerts (in the ARTS II system) as mandated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Common ARTS fielding began in 1997. ARTS IIE systems are designed to handle traffic at small and medium sized TRACONs, while ARTS IIIE systems are capable of handling traffic at the largest TRACONs in the national airspace system.

  • ARTS IIE A2.09 systems replaced all ARTS IIA systems at 130 small to medium-sized TRACONs.
  • ARTS IIIE systems operate at the large TRACONs in Dallas/Fort Worth, New York, Chicago, Southern California, Denver, Northern California, Potomac Consolidated, Atlanta, Minneapolis-St. Paul, St. Louis, and Louisville.
