SURVIVING
THE RECOGNITION PROCESS
WRITING TIPS
Read the award guidelines carefully. Pay particular
attention to the purpose, eligibility, criteria, format, and deadline for submittal.
Format may vary, according to the specific criteria and local requirements.
Be brief. Generally, most nominations are limited to one
page of justification.
- Use short sentences.
- Use short paragraphs.
- Use easy words.
- Use active words.
- Use personal words.
- Get to the point FAST!
Be factual. Use precise statements and work measurement.
Whenever possible, state specific cost savings or identify specific benefits
derived from the contribution. Avoid generalities in favor of details of the achievement.
Be objective. The justification should cover the
nominees job performance rather than personality traits.
Did the nominee experience extraordinary work demands or
persevere in the face of setbacks?
Were insurmountable obstacles overcome such as budget
constraints; extremely tight schedules; limited staffing; limited cooperation or support
from other employees, organizations, or managers; negative publicity; low morale; natural
disasters; etc.
Did the nominee develop a new technique; improve an old
process; address interpersonal problems in a unique way; improve customer service; improve
quality of work life, etc.?
Include a short anecdote about the achievement. It can add
impact to the justification.
Have someone else proofread the nomination. Recheck for
grammar, style, and consistency.
Remember that words alone can fall flat if you are
not sincere.
