International NOTAM Availability and Distribution

a. The distribution of U.S. international NOTAMs to foreign International NOTAM Offices (NOFs) and the receipt and distribution of foreign International NOTAMs are accomplished by the U.S. International NOTAM Office (U.S. NOF), ATT-134, located in Herndon, Virginia.

b. NOFs exchange Class I NOTAMs with the other NOFs via the Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunications Network (AFTN). Class one NOTAMs are those NOTAMs distributed via telecommunications (NOTAMs distributed via Postal Services are class II NOTAMs). NOTAMs from foreign NOFs destined for the U.S. are received via AFTN at the FAA National Communications Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and are relayed to the U.S. NOF in Washington, DC. The U.S. NOF receives all incoming Class I International NOTAMs for processing and automatic distribution to U.S. aviation users.

c. The U.S. NOF reviews all Class I NOTAMs received to insure their completeness, for conversion into English plain-text language and for redistribution to aviation users in the conterminous U.S., Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Upon distribution to the aviation users, all Class I NOTAMs are simultaneously entered into a computerized International NOTAM file at the National Communications Center in Kansas City according to both NOTAM number and location. Computer storage of Class I International NOTAM information allows the NOTAMs to be made available for instant recall by all FSSs and AFTN subscribers through the request-reply feature of the Service B and AFTN telecommunications networks.

d. Only current Class I NOTAMs are available by request-reply on Service B and AFTN. Queries for NOTAMs from the NOTAM file at the National Communications Center in Kansas City may be for a list of all NOTAMs for a location or for a single NOTAM number. (Airspace NOTAMs are filed under the issuing NOF.)

e. The U.S. NOF does not exchange Class I International NOTAMs with all foreign International NOFs. A complete tabulation of International NOTAM exchange among International NOFs and the areas of responsibility for each NOF is contained in ICAO Document 7383-AIS/503, Aeronautical Information Services Provided by States (see Charts and Publications for Flights Outside the U.S. in this manual for subscription information).
