The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for noncommercial purposes need not obtain prior permission; however, a flight plan must be on file at least 2 hours prior to arrival.

     2. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft landing for commercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Assistant Under Secretary of Civil Aviation, P.O. Box 586, Bahrain (TELEGRAPHIC ADDRESS: AIR CIVIL BAHRAIN/TELEX: 9186 AIRCIV BN) at least 2 working days prior to arrival and departure. Requests must include:

       a. Name of operator.

       b. Type of aircraft and registration marks.

       c. Dates and times of arrival, stopovers and departure.

       d. Place(s) of embarkation and disembarkation of passengers and cargo abroad.

       e. Purpose of flight, number of passengers and type and amount of cargo.

       f. Name, address and business of charterer, if any.

       g. Nationality of passengers. Authorizations issued to private and corporate aircraft do not constitute approval to operate for revenue purposes, and passengers carried by corporate aircraft shall be limited to staff of the company.

     3. Passport and visa required. Multi entry tourist visa requires that the applicant submit a letter (for visa) or company letter (for business visa) on company letterhead guaranteeing full responsibility for all expenses, and stating a reason for visit and duration, 1 application form, and $50 fee. Transit visa available upon arrival for stay of up to 72 hours, must have return/onward ticket. Send SASE for return of passport by mail.      No internal constraints reported, but flights to/from Israel and South Africa prohibited.

4. Special Notices

     Overflying Bahrain Island is prohibited.
