The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft landing for noncommercial purposes must provide 24 hours advance notification to the Direction du Service de L'Aeronautique du Burundi, B.P. 694, Bujumbura, Burundi (TELEGRAPHIC ADDRESS: AEROBU BUJUMBURA/TELEX: NONE).

     2. Nonscheduled commercial flights landing for commercial purposes must obtain prior permission at least 3 working days in advance of arrival from the Direction du Service de L'Aeronautique du Burundi. Requests must include provision for pre-paid reply. Request must include:

       a. Name of aircraft operator.

       b. Type of aircraft and registration marks.

       c. Radio call, dates and times of arrival/departure.

       d. Purpose of flight.

       e. Number of passengers and type and amount of cargo.

       f. Origin and destination of flight.

         NOTE-All aircraft overflying the territory of Burundi must follow the same procedures as for commercial flights. Requests for official flights must be submitted through diplomatic channels.

     3. Passport and visa required. For specific requirements, consult the Embassy of the Republic of Burundi, Suite 212, 2233 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20007 (202/342-2574) or Permanent Mission of Burundi to the U.N. (212/499-0001 thru 0006).

3. Corporate Aircraft Constraints

     No internal constraints reported. Flights to/from or passing through South Africa may not land in or overfly Burundi.
