The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for noncommercial purposes need not obtain prior permission; however, a flight plan must be on file and received by Botswana officials at least 48 hours prior to departure.

     2. Nonscheduled commercial aircraft landing for commercial purposes must obtain prior permission and a temporary air service permit from the Director of Civil Aviation, P.O. Box 250, Gaborone, Botswana (TELEGRAPHIC ADDRESS: AVIATION GABORONE/TELEX: 2522DCAHQBD) prior to departure. All requests must be accompanied with a prepaid reply and must include:

       a. Name and address of aircraft operator.

       b. Flight number, type of aircraft and registration marks.

       c. Date and time of departure, complete route of flight and date, time and airport of arrival.

       d. Date, time and airport of departure from Botswana, complete route of flight and destination after leaving Botswana.

       e. Name and nationality of pilot.

       f. Type and amount of cargo.

       g. Number and nationality of passengers.

       h. Name and address of charterer.

     3. Passport, onward/return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds required. Visa not required for U.S. citizens staying no more than 90 days.
