The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for noncommercial purposes must provide at least 24 hours advance notification to the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Apartado Postal 5026, San Jose, Costa Rica (TELEGRAPHIC ADDRESS: AEROCIVIL SAN JOSE/TELEX: NONE). Notification must include:

       a. Type of aircraft and registration marks.

       b. Name of operator and purpose of flight.

       c. Dates and times of entry into and departure from Costa Rican airspace.

     2. If landing, include:

       a. Dates and times of arrival and departure at airport(s) of entry.

       b. Number of passengers.

       c.Type and amount of cargo.

     3. Nonscheduled commercial flights landing for commercial purpose must request permission 2 weeks in advance and submit all of the above information.

     4. Passport and onward/return ticket required. (Persons under the age of 16 must use a valid passport to enter Costa Rica.) Tourist card issued upon arrival at airport upon presentation of aforementioned documents for approximately $4. U.S. citizens must have onward/return ticket. For stays over 90 days, you must apply for an extension (within the first week of visit) with Costa Rican Immigration and, after 90 days, obtain exit visa and possess a valid U.S. passport. 4. Special Notices

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for noncommercial purposes must have on board the following documents:

       a. Pilot's license, current medical certificate, and passport.

       b. Aircraft maintenance inspection records.

       c. Aircraft operations manuals.

       d. Certificate of airworthiness.

       e. Proof of aircraft insurance.

     2. Persons on business may be required to present a letter in duplicate stating occupation, purpose of visit, length of stay and financial responsibility.
