The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for commercial or noncommercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Casilla 2077, Quito, Ecuador (TELEGRAPHIC ADDRESS: DIRAVIACIVIL QUITO/TELEX: 2710-DAC UIO ED) at least a minimum of 48 hours, or a maximum 15 days prior to departure. All requests must include:

       a. Type of aircraft and registration marks.

       b. Name of pilot and number of crew.

       c. Number of passengers and type and amount of cargo.

       d. Complete route of flight from point of origin to point of destination.

       e. Date and time of arrival, stopover and departure and airports concerned.

       f. Purpose of flight. Aircraft that will be overflying only must substitute date and time of entry and exit of Ecuadorian airspace for item (e) above. Authorization for the flight will be valid for no more than 5 days from the estimated date/time requested. Once expired a new request must be submitted. All requests must provide for a prepaid response if AFTN is not used. Commercial aircraft overflying must indicate business address for effective billing by DGCA. Unauthorized aircraft will be intercepted.

     2. (including the Galapagos Islands) Passport required. Visa not required for a stay of up to 90 days.
