The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

     1. Private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for noncommercial purposes need not obtain prior approval; however, a flight plan must be on file.

     2. Non-scheduled commercial aircraft landing for commercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Directorate of Civil Aviation, Aeronautical Information Service, ELLEBJERGVEJ 50, P.O. Box 744, DK 2450 Copenhagen SV. (TELEGRAPHIC ADDRESS: CIVILAIR COPENHAGEN/TELEX: 27096 FAX (36) 44 03 03), at least 7 days in advance of flight, not including Sundays and holidays Requests must include:

       a. Name and address of operator.

       b. Type aircraft and registration marks.

       c. Dates and times of arrival and departure and airports concerned.

       d. Airports where passengers and cargo are to be loaded or unloaded.

       e. Number of passengers.

       f. Type and amount of cargo.

       g. Purpose of flight.

       h. Name and address of charterer.

       i. Current third party and air carrier's liability insurance contracts.

       j. For inclusive tour flights, details on the planning of the trip and the arrangements included therein.

     3. Application for permission to carry out a series of not more than four flights during two consecutive calendar months during the period from April-October must be received by the Directorate of Civil Aviation not later than January 15, and for the period November-March, not later than September 1.

     4. Passport required. Visa not required for a stay of up to 90 days. (90-day period begins when entering Schengen countries.) Special rules apply for entry into the U.S.-operated defense area in Greenland. 4. Special Notices

     Operators of light aircraft making flights in the Sondrestrom Flight Information Region are cautioned to take note that VHF coverage within the airspace is incomplete, and that an operable High Frequency (HF) transceiver is needed to comply with the requirements of the Greenland Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), which applies. Moreover, pilots must ascertain and have available the correct HF frequencies to be used prior to entering the area. Compliance with this requirement is necessary to reduce risks involved in operations in this remote area, and to avoid unnecessary and expensive alerts and search activities.
