The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     NOTE- There have been a number of incidents in which civil aircraft have been detained for deviating from approved flight plans. U.S. citizens piloting civil aircraft in India must file any changes to previous flight plans with the appropriate Indian authorities and may not overfly restricted airspace.

     1. Private and nonscheduled commercial flights overflying or landing, for noncommercial purposes must give at least 72 hours notice to the Deputy Director, Air Transport Director General of Civil Aviation, DGCA COMPLEX, TECHNICAL CENTER, OPPSITE SAFDARJUNG AIRPORT, New Delhi, 110 003 (Telegraphic Address: AIRCIVIL NEW DELHI; Telex: 031-74127; Fax 91-11-462 9221) and furnish the following information:

       a. Call-sign and registration number of aircraft.

       b. Route of the aircraft.

       c. ETA and ETD of aircraft.

       d. Crew size.

       e. Number of passengers.

       f. Commander's name.

       g. Cargo, if any, and description thereof.

       h. Type of aircraft.

       i. Operator of aircraft (company name) with full postal address.

     2. Nonscheduled commercial flights landing for commercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Director General of Civil Aviation at least 10 days prior to departure. In addition to requirements listed above, all requests must include:

       a. Nationality, number, and description of passengers to embark or disembark in India.

       b. Size, weight, and description of cargo containers.

       c. Type of flight (inclusive tour, affinity group, etc.).

       d. Name and address of travel agent in India.

       e. True origin and destination of passengers and cargo.

       f. Date and place of origin of flight.

       g. Complete route itinerary, including dates and times.

       h. Details of the cost to the charterer and the amount paid by each passenger. for cargo flights, the amount paid by the consignor.

       i. For traffic to be loaded in India, it must be indicated as to how the traffic was brought to India with details of the arrival of such traffic.

     3. Passport and visa required. Tourist visas require 1 application form, 2 photos, onward/return ticket, $150 fee, and proof of sufficient funds. Visa must be obtained before arrival. Include prepaid envelope for return of passport by certified mail. AIDS test required for all students and anyone over 18 staying 1 year or more; U.S. test from well-known lab accepted. 4. Special Notices

     1. All aircraft having a gross weight of 12,500 lbs. or less shall immediately, upon entry into India and without a prior landing elsewhere in India, be flown to and landed at:

       a. If the entry is from the West, Mumbai (Bombay) Airport. (Aircraft entering from the West may also land at Delhi Airport or Ahmedabad Airport subject to the conditions stipulated in 3, below.)

       b. If the entry is from the East, Calcutta Airport, Chennai (Madras) Airport, or Tiruchchirappalli Airport.

       c. If the entry is from the South, Chennai (Madras) Airport or Tiruchchirappalli Airport.

       d. If the entry is from Nepal, Calcutta Airport, Delhi Airport, Patna Airport, or Varanasi Airport.

     2. All aircraft having a gross weight exceeding 12,500 lbs. shall immediately upon entry into India and without a prior landing elsewhere in India be flown to and landed at:

       a. If the entry is from the West, Mumbai (Bombay) Airport, Calcutta Airport or Chennai (Madras) Airport. (Aircraft entering from the West may also land at Delhi Airport, Ahmedabad Airport or Tiruchchirappalli Airport subject to the conditions stipulated in paragraph 3, below.)

       b. If the entry is from the East or South, Mumbai (Bombay) Airport, Calcutta Airport, Chennai (Madras) Airport, Tiruchchirappalli Airport, Delhi Airport, or Ahmedabad Airport.

       c. If the entry is from Nepal, Calcutta Airport, Delhi Airport, Patna Airport, Varanasi Airport, Mumbai (Bombay) Airport, or Ahmeddabad Airport.

     3. If the first landing in India is at Delhi Airport, Ahmedabad Airport, or Tiruchchirappalli Airport for an aircraft entering India from the west, it shall be subject to the following conditions:

       a. All persons on board coming from yellow fever infected areas as declared by the Central Government shall be in possession of valid international certificates against yellow fever.

       b. The aircraft shall have been disinfected at the commencement of the journey.

       c. The pilot-in-command of the aircraft shall send a radio message 3 hours before arrival about the state of health of any person on board, who has visited a yellow fever infected area, as declared by the Central Government, within the previous 9 days and who is not in possession of a valid yellow fever certificate.

       d. If, on inspection of the aircraft, the Airport Health Officer detects any person or crew member suspected to be infected with yellow fever, the Airport Health Officer may direct the pilot-in-command of the aircraft to proceed to Calcutta or Mumbai (Bombay) or any other place as may be designated by the Airport Health Officer and the pilot-in-command of the aircraft shall obey such direction.

     4. All aircraft, after landing, shall not proceed further unless the pilot has obtained a clearance certificate in writing from an officer duly authorized by the Central Government.
