The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for commercial or noncommercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Civil Aviation Organization, P.O. Box 3227, Mehrabad International Airport, Tehran, Iran (Telegraphic Address: CIVILAIR TEHRAN; Telex: 213889 EPDIR) at least 24 hours prior to departure (7 days if landing for commercial purposes). All requests must include:

       a. Name of operator.

       b. Aircraft type, nationality, and registration marks.

       c. Route of flight, including dates and times of entry and exit from Iranian airspace.

       d. Dates, times, and airports of arrival and departure, if landing.

       e. Alternative airports.

       f. Number of passengers and places of embarkation or disembarkation.

       g. Type, amount, origin and destination of cargo and name of consignor and consignee in Iran.

       h. Name, address, and business of charterer.

       i. Purpose of flight.

     2. Passport and visa required. The United States does not maintain diplomatic or consular relations with Iran. For visa information, contact the Embassy of Pakistan, Iranian Interests Section, 2209 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20007 (202/965-4990).
