The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for commercial or noncommercial purposes must obtain prior permission through the American Embassy, Rue Bartholonie Vientiane (TELEX: NONE) far enough in advance for the request to be processed through diplomatic channels and received by the Foreign Ministry of Laos at least 15 days prior to departure.

     2. All requests must include:

       a. Type of aircraft and registration marks.

       b. Radio call and frequency.

       c. Name and nationality of pilot and crew members.

       d. Complete route of flight.

       e. Dates, times of entry and exit from airspace of Laos.

       f. Dates and times of arrival and departure, if landing.

       g. Flight altitudes.

       h. Reason for flight.

       i. Number and nationality of passengers and type and amount of cargo.

       j. Name and address of aircraft operator and owner.

       k. Type and amount of fuel required.

     3. Passport and visa required. Visa requires $30 fee, 1 application form, 1 photo, onward/return ticket, sufficient funds, and SASE for return of passport by mail. Tourist visas can be obtained upon arrival at certain entry points or before departure from the Lao Embassy. Visa available for a stay of up to 15 days, extended. 4. Special Notices

     Any person subject to the jurisdiction of the United States or any corporation, partnership, organization or association considering the operation of an aircraft into Laos must review current Department of Commerce and Department of State regulations providing guidance relating to trade and other transactions involving Laos.
