The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for noncommercial purposes need not obtain prior permission; however, a flight plan must be on file to provide prior notice.

     2. Nonscheduled commercial and charter flights landing for commercial purposes must obtain permission from the Director of Civil Aviation P.O. Box 629, Maseru, Lesotho (Telegraphic Address: CVLAIR MASERU; Telex: 4321 CVLAIR LO) at least 48 hours prior to the day for which the flight is planned. All telegrams must be accompanied by an amount which could be ascertained at the point of origin for a prepaid reply telegram.

     3. Applications must contain the following information:

       a. Name of operator.

       b. Type of aircraft and registration marks.

       c. Name of the pilot-in-command.

       d. Purpose of flight.

       e. Place, date and time of departure inbound to Lesotho.

       f. Destination aerodrome(s) and date and time of outbound departures.

       g. Number of persons on board. If an operator wishes to perform regular nonscheduled flights or a series of flights or a series of nonscheduled flights into Lesotho, an application must be made in writing to the Director of Civil Aviation.

     4. Passport, onward/return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds required. Visa not required for a stay of up to 30 days. For more information, check with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Lesotho, 2511 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20008 (202/797-5533).
