The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All aircraft overflying or landing must have a flight plan on file and must obtain prior permission from the Director of Civil Aviation at the following address at least 72 hours in advance of entering Maldives Air-space or intended landing. Civil Aviation Department, Ministry of Transport and Communications, 2nd Floor, Huravee Building, Male' 20-05, Republic of Maldives.      2. All requests must include:

       a. Name and full address of aircraft operating agency.

       b. Aircraft type.

       c. Aircraft nationality and registration mark.

       d. Aircraft call sign.

       e. Name and nationality of Commander.

       f. Number and nationality of crew and passengers.

       g. General description of goods carried, if any.

       h. Purpose of flight.

       i. Schedule, route, date, time of operation.

     3. Passport required. Tourist visa issued upon arrival for 30 days validity, no charge (for stays longer than 30 days, you must apply at the immigration office in Maldives). Visitors must have proof of hotel reservations, onward/return transportation and sufficient funds. Check with the Maldives Mission to the U.N. in New York (212/599-6195) for further information.
