The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for commercial or noncommercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Director General of Civil Aviation and Meteorology, P.O. Box 1, Postal Code 111, C.P.O. SEEP International Airport, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman (Telegraphic Address: CIVAIR MUSCAT; Telex: 5418 DGCAOMAN ON; Fax: (968) 510122) at least 72 hours prior to arrival.

     2. All requests must include:

       a. Name of aircraft operator.

       b. Aircraft type and registration marks.

       c. Dates and times of arrival and departure.

       d. Place of embarkation and disembarkation abroad of passengers and cargo.

       e. Purpose of flight.

       f. Number of passengers and type and amount of cargo.

       g. Name, address, and business of charterer, if any.

       h. Names of crew members.

     3. Passport (must be valid for not less than 12 months) and visa required. Tourist/business visas for multiple-entry issued for stay of up to 6 months and valid for 2 years requires $60 fee (cash, cashier’s check, or money order). Single-entry visa requires $36 fee (cash, cashier’s check or money order). Both types of visas require 1 application form and a SASE for return of passport by mail. AIDS test required for work permits. U.S. test not accepted. Allow 1-3 days for processing. For transit and road travel, check with the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman, 2535 Belmont Rd., NW, Washington, DC 20008 (202/387-1980, 1981 or 1982).

3. Corporate Aircraft Constraints

     Cabotage not permitted for residents or nonresidents. In special cases, may be permitted by Directorate General of Civil Aviation, subject to clearance by the military. Corporate aircraft subject to same civil aviation regulations as commercial flights. Flights to/from Israel are explicitly prohibited.

4. Special Notices

     1. Aircraft to/from Israel. No aircraft which has departed from any point within Israel may enter Oman airspace, nor may any aircraft proceed from any point within Oman to any point in Israel. Aircraft constructed in Israel are not permitted to navigate in Oman.

     2. Violations to Oman airspace and restricted areas will expose the aircraft concerned to the dangers of firing without prior notice.
