M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

1. Private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for noncommercial purposes need not obtain prior permission; however, a flight plan must be on file and received by ATC at least 2 hours prior to entering Portuguese airspace.

2. Nonscheduled commercial aircraft landing for commercial purpose must obtain prior permission from the Direccao Geral da Aviacao Civil, Avenida da Liberade 193, 1298 Lisbon Codex, Portugal, (Telegraphic Address: AEROCIVIL LISBOA; Telex: 12120 AERCIV-P) at least 2 working days prior to departure.

3. All requests must include:

a. Name of operator.

b. Type of aircraft and registration marks.

c. Dates and times of arrival/departure.

d. Points of loading/unloading of cargo and passengers.

e. Purpose of flight.

f. Number of passengers and type and amount of cargo.

g. Name, address, and business of charterer, if any.

4. Affinity charter, student charter and inclusive tour charter flights are subject to special regulation and requests should be submitted on special forms available from the Direccao Geral de Aviacao Civil.

5. Maderia Islands

a. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying need not obtain prior permission; however, a flight plan must be on file.

b. All private and noncommercial aircraft landing for commercial or noncommercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Direccao Geral da Aviacao Civil, Avenida da Liberdade 193, 1298 Lisbon Codex, Portugal, (Telegraphic Address: AEROCIVIL LISBOA; Telex: 12 120 AERCIV P) 48 hours prior to departure.

c. All requests must include:

(1) Name of operator.

(2) Type of aircraft and registration marks.

(3) Dates and times of arrival, stopovers, and departure.

(4) Place(s) of embarkation/disembarkation of passengers and cargo.

(5) Nature of traffic and purpose of flight.

(6) Name, address, and business of charterer, if any.

6. (Includes travel to the Azores and Madeira Islands.) Passport required. Visa not required for visit up to 90 days. (90-day period begins when entering Schengen countries.)
