Airports of Entry (AOE)

The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. All nonscheduled commercial flights overflying or landing for commercial or noncommercial purposes must obtain prior permission at least 5 working days prior to departure from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Department of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (Telegraphic Address: DIRAVIAMET KIGALI; Telex: None). Private flights must obtain prior permission as noted, but at least 3 copies must be submitted to the American Embassy, B.P. 28, Kigali, Rwanda (Telegraphic Address: AMEMBASSY KIGALI; Telex: None), 3 working days in advance.

     2. All requests, private and commercial, must include:

       a. Name of aircraft owner.

       b. Type of aircraft.

       c. Radio call-sign.

       d. Country where aircraft registered.

       e. Name of aircraft commander.

       f. Number of crew members.

       g. Number and names of passengers.

       h. Type and amount of cargo.

       i. Dates and times of arrival at and departure from Kigali Airport or, for overflights, coordinates of the points aircraft will cross Rwanda's Boundary.

       j. Place of origin and destination of flight.

       k. Purpose of flight.

     3. Passport required. Visa not required for a stay of up to 30 days.
