EMERGENCY INFLIGHT SERVICES
If you are unsure of your position, lost or disoriented, assistance can be provided through various means including aircraft orientation. Requests for assistance should be made as soon as you are aware of a problem. When a critical condition exists, any available frequency should be utilized. However, 121.5 MHz, the emergency frequency, is guarded by Flight Service Stations and other Air Traffic Control Facilities.
Direction Finding equipment (DF) is no longer available at ISP and POU, as the sites have been decommissioned. However, VOR, ADF and landmark assistance for position fixing is available from New York Radio.
New York Radio encourages pilots to request a practice VOR or ADF orientation under VFR conditions. This will familiarize pilots with the procedures and assist the specialists in maintaining proficiency. Specialists will honor requests received for practice, workload and conditions permitting.
Pilots requesting a practice VOR or ADF orientation over Long Island should be positioned east of Brookhaven Airport and must stay clear of the Long Island Class C and the New York Class B Airspace. 122.6 over eastern L.I. and 122.4 in the POU area are appropriate frequencies.
Please note: While 122.2 may be considered the universal Flight Service radio frequency, we understand that it is not always possible to reach New York Radio by using this frequency.
As a helpful guide here is a listing of discrete frequencies which may serve you better.
