Sikorsky S42B flying boats provided the first air services into the South Pacific from North America, courtesy of Pan American Airlines, in 1937. The first flight into Auckland arrived in March 1937, a pioneering flight piloted by Captain Edwin Musick. A year later after the inauguration of passenger flights on this route, he lost his life in a tragic mid-air explosion near Samoa, and the service was suspended. Musick Point in Auckland Harbour is named after him.
