Air Traffic Control
Chicago TRACON (C90) performed an amazing feat last year that has never before been accomplished. C90 set a facility traffic count record in 2002, with 1,419,494 operations, equating to 19,182 per certified professional controller. This represents an increase of 2.7 percent over the previous year's count, and 1.45 percent over the previous record. This amazing amount of traffic was run with only four operational errors, a 50% reduction from 2001. This is a rate of only .28 per 100,000 operations.
The 19,182 operations per CPC is almost twice as many per CPC as the next nearest facility we could find. The next closest is Las Vegas TRACON with 9931 operations per CPC. New York TRACON ran 7942 operations per CPC and Cleveland Center ran 7883 operations per CPC. When you look at these staggering numbers it makes the record traffic year with minimal operational errors even more amazing. The controllers at C90 truly are the epitome of Air Traffic Control.
Chicago Approach Control airspace is within a 40-mile radius of Chicago O’Hare International Airport, surface to 13,000 feet MSL. We average 3,500 TRACON operations a day, with a record high of 4,781 set on 07/27/01.
There are forty-seven public and private airports that lie within C90’s airspace. We provide IFR arrival and departure services to twenty-four of those airports – with emphasis on O’Hare and Midway airports. Five of those airports provide FAA Air Traffic Control towers (Chicago O’Hare, Chicago Midway, DuPage, Palwaukee, and Aurora), and three airports provide contract Air Traffic Control services (Chicago Meigs, Gary, and Waukegan). Adjacent Air Traffic Control Facilities include: Chicago ARTCC, Rockford Approach Control, Milwaukee Approach Control, and South Bend Approach Control.
