The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a Notice to Airmen today instituting temporary airspace restrictions for the Valdez Class E Area. Pilots entering an area in a radius of 6.6 nautical miles of Valdez Airport and within 3.1 nautical miles each side of the Valdez localizer course must communicate with the agency's air traffic service.
All aircraft entering the Valdez airspace from the surface to 8,000 feet must contact the Automated Flight Service Station at Juneau prior to entering the airspace. Pilots flying aircraft not equipped with a radio must call the Flight Service Station prior to departure to coordinate time, altitude and route of flight.
This action is a result of the terrorist atrocities of September 11, 2001. Pilots are required to establish communications on common air traffic radio frequencies with their call sign, position, altitude and route of flight.
Pilots are reminded to contact the Automated Flight Service Stations to keep abreast of Notices, changing regulations and current weather. The phone number for Juneau AFSS is (907) 586-7382.
