LAS VEGAS — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) today announced a series of meetings to allow the public to comment on the possible environmental impacts of building a new commercial service airport in Southern Nevada’s Ivanpah Valley.

The Clark County, Nev. Department of Aviation is proposing to build and operate the new airport to provide additional capacity to serve visitors to the metropolitan Las Vegas area as well as Clark County residents. The new airport would not replace McCarran International Airport.

FAA and BLM are the joint lead agencies responsible for preparing the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed project. The EIS is required under the National Environmental Policy Act and the federal Ivanpah Valley Airport Public Lands Transfer Act.

The environmental analysis process will examine the project’s likely effects on land use, airspace and safety, capacity, air and water quality, noise, economics and social behavior, biological and cultural resources and transportation, as well as the project’s overall impact. The thorough and complex review will take an estimated four years to complete.

The upcoming meetings help determine the specific topics and the depth of analysis needed for an environmental review and are known as scoping meetings. They will allow agencies, officials, Native American tribes and other members of the public to present background and technical information, and to comment on the proposed airport, alternatives to be considered and impacts to be evaluated.

The schedule for the public meetings is as follows:

Tuesday, October 3 (Evening) – Jean Airport Special Events Center
23600 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Jean, NV
5 PM:  Doors Open, Display Boards and Presentation Available
