Notable Demonstration Flights

A key goal of AIRE has been to demonstrate reduced emissions and/or noise by utilizing a portfolio of best practices on demonstration flights. These environmentally-friendly procedures are divided into the three domains–Surface, Terminal, and Oceanic/En-route–to enable stakeholders to concentrate their expertise on specific areas. Demonstration areas include the following:

Surface

  • Reduced-engine taxi
  • Minimum delay for arrival/departure taxi to/from the gate
  • Reduced use of Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)

Terminal

  • Tailored arrivals (TAs)
  • Optimized Profile Descent (OPD) & Continuous Descent Arrival (CDA)
  • Continuous climb on departure
  • Step Climb with wind calculations

En-route/Oceanic

  • Lateral route optimization
  • Longitudinal optimization (time, Mach number)
  • Vertical optimization
  • User-preferred routes

Gate-to-Gate Demonstration Flights

  • Gate-to-Gate Demonstration flights are encouraged to use and demonstrate all applicable best practices.
