En-route/Oceanic Demonstrations
2008:
Lateral Route Optimization in New York Oceanic Airspace (ZNY)
In May 2008, FAA and NAV Portugal collaborated to allow partner airline Air Europa to modify the routing for their flights while en route, a procedure known as lateral route optimization or Dynamic Airborne Reroute Procedure (DARP). This technique can save airlines fuel by allowing aircraft to reroute to take advantage of favorable tailwinds or minimize headwinds. These trials are known as the
Phase I demonstration flights (PDF) and included the following flights:
Air Europa 51 from Madrid (MAD) to Havana (HAV)
- Airbus A330
- May 19, 20, 26 & 27
Air Europa 89 from Madrid (MAD) to Santo Domingo (SDQ)
Air Europa 71 from Madrid (MAD) to Caracas (CCS)
2009:
Lateral Route Optimization in New York Oceanic Airspace (ZNY)
The lateral route optimization trial continued in 2009. In this part of the trial, partners Lufthansa and Air Europa participated. These flights are known as the Phase II demonstration flights and included:
- 73 flights
- June through December
- Flights mainly within ZNY and Santa Maria (LPPO) Oceanic Centers
- Westbound only
2010:
Lateral Route Optimization in New York Oceanic Airspace (ZNY)
- Lufthansa and Air Europa continued to participate in lateral optimization demos
- Lateral optimization became fully operational and available for both eastbound and westbound flights
2011:
Lateral Route Optimization in New York Oceanic Airspace (ZNY)
- As part of the AIRE II demonstration flights, FAA will assist in lateral optimization for Air France flights between Paris (Orly) and the Caribbean. These flights will demonstrate the emissions reductions achievable by using lateral route optimization.
