Pre-Designation Knowledge Test
If you meet FAA requirements for initial designation sought in your application, the NEB will send you a letter to notify you of your acceptance, and to request you apply to take the pre-designation knowledge test. You must:
- Make an appointment with the testing center, using the appropriate designation:
- PEA - Pilot Examiner Airplane
- PEB - Pilot Examiner Balloon
- PEG - Pilot Examiner Glider
- PER - Pilot Examiner Rotorcraft
- PEY - Pilot Examiner Gyroplane
- DME - Designated Mechanic Examiner
- DPRE - Designated Parachute Rigger Examiner.
- Present the NEB acceptance letter to the testing center proctor prior to taking the test.
- Pay for the pre-designation test.
- Forward the test results (original with raised seal) to the NEB within 10 days of the date of the test.
- Retain a copy of the pre-designation knowledge test report for your personal records.
To continue the application process, you must obtain a grade of 80 percent or higher on the pre-designation knowledge test. If you fail the test, or choose to retake it to obtain a higher score, you may retake the test 30 days after the date the last test was completed.
Your name will be placed in the designee candidate pool only after the NEB receives the written test report with a passing grade. Pre-designation written tests are valid for a period of 2 years.
