Health Awareness Program
The Health Awareness Program recently sponsored a lecture on prostate cancer at the Eastern Regional Office. The guest speaker was Mr. Allen Levine, Assistant Director of Social Service of Cancer Care, Inc. Mr. Levine discussed the rise in prostate cancer, and the benefits of early detection of the disease.
Prostate cancer has become the most common form of cancer for American men. It is also the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men, with lung cancer being the leading cause. The number of diagnosis and fatalities of prostate cancer has significantly increased in recent years. Mr. Levine stated that 1 out of 10 men will be afflicted with this ailment during their lifetime. That number will increase from a 1 to 9 ratio by the dawn of the millennium.
Prostate cancer was a disease associated with men who are over 65 but the disease is striking younger men, especially those in their 40s and 50s. It is advisable for men over the age of 40 who have a history of prostate cancer in their family to have a yearly prostate exam. Mr. Levine emphasizes the importance of early detection in the prevention of this disease. Prostate cancer is a treatable disease when detected early. Safety Inspector's Daughter Starts 'Vetmobile'
Making sure planes fly safely is T.J. Ward’s job as aviation safety inspector at the Dulles National Field Office. Making sure pets get the care they need, whether they can travel or not, is the job of his daughter, Michelle Ward.
She and Christine Foster started the first mobile veterinary service in Virginia, which they run from a 24-foot van Ward’s dad helped customize.
The new service, called Companion Paws, was featured in a September 12 Washington Post story, “She Takes the Vet to the Pets: Busy Owners Praise Service.” Foster works as the veterinarian while Ward serves as the business administrator.
The pair started Companion Paws to fill a niche the community needs - many in the metropolitan areas often don’t have time to make regular visits to the vet. Some clients are elderly or disabled while others simply have too many animals to transport. In addition, diagnosis is often easier at the pets’ homes, Foster said. “In many cases, the anxiety of being taken to the veterinary office masked the symptoms of illness,” she explained.
The new business has taken off. “I wouldn’t use them just for the convenience,” said one customer. “Both Dr. Foster and Michelle are excellent at what they do. I’ve just been extremely impressed."
