Ironwood East and Ironwood West

Temporary Military Operations Areas, MI

Effective Dates: August 2-27, 2021.

The Ironwood East and Ironwood West Temporary Military Operations Areas (MOAs) are established over northwest Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in support of Exercise Northern Lightning (NL-21). The exercise is designed to provide realistic training employment of 4th and 5th generation fighter aircraft in a Large Force Exercise scenario focusing on Fighter Integration tactics in a non-permissive environment. Additionally, other phases of training (surface attack tactics, close air support, etc.) will be occurring concurrently in the Volk MOA complex in central Wisconsin.

The Ironwood East and Ironwood West Temporary MOAs will be used by pilots for conducting Air Interdiction (AI) training activities. All participating aircraft will be operating out of the Volk Field Air National Guard Base, Camp Douglas, WI; Truax Field Air National Guard Base, Madison, WI; and Duluth Air National Guard Base, Duluth, MN, with a maximum of 28 sorties per day during the exercises. Participating exercise aircraft will include L-159, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, and F-35 fighters and activities in the temporary MOAs will occur between 8,000 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL) to, but not including Flight Level 180 (FL180).

The Ironwood East and Ironwood West Temporary MOAs will only be activated for aircraft participating in Exercise Northern Lightning. Aerial activities will consist of typical MOA flight operations to include aggressive three-dimensional tactical combat maneuvering involving abrupt, unpredictable changes in altitude, attitude, and direction of flight by participating aircraft. Supersonic flight is not authorized in the Ironwood East or Ironwood West Temporary MOAs; however, chaff and flare countermeasures will be employed with a minimum altitude of 8,000 feet MSL.

Nonparticipant pilots are encouraged to contact the nearest flight service station and request the latest NOTAM information or contact Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) for the status of the Ironwood East and Ironwood West Temporary MOAs.
