GBS F8 - Atlas IIA

Lockheed Martin Corporation launched an ATLAS II launch vehicle on 16 March 1998 at 21:32 UTC The ATLAS II was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Station, Florida. The ATLAS II carried the GBS F8 satellite to geostationary transfer orbit. GBS F8 ownership will be transferred to the U. S. Navy on orbit and is a Hughes Space and Communications Company HS 601 satellite. The series of UHF, EHF and GBS satellites are replacements for the FLTSATCOM and LEASAT satellites and will provide a global communications network serving ships at sea and a variety of other U.S. military fixed and mobile terminals.
