The Chicago En Route Center has been evacuated due to a fire in a basement telecommunications room that was reported just before 6 a.m. local time. Because of the evacuation, the FAA issued a ground stop for flights in the area and flights heading to the Chicago metropolitan area and has transferred airspace management to adjacent air traffic facilities.

The FBI, ATF and Aurora Police and Fire Department are on the scene and investigating. FAA is supporting the investigation.  Inquiries about injuries should be directed to the Aurora Police Department.

Flights that were already in the air destined to the Chicago area were allowed to continue at a reduced rate, or proceed to an alternate destination. Flights are currently arriving and departing in the Chicago area at a reduced rate.

The FAA is working with carriers to reduce disruption.  There is a potential for delays for people traveling by air today.  Several airlines are cancelling or re-routing flights. Some airlines have cancelled or delayed flights. Travelers are encouraged to contact their airlines for further information.
