FORT WORTH – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today honored eight airports in FAA’s five-state Southwest Region. Awards were announced during the annual regional airports partnership conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The region includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

In each of the five states, the FAA named a 2005 Airport of the Year to recognize outstanding contributions airports make to enhance aviation in their state. Two other special awards focus on safety and environmental excellence. Kelvin L. Solco, FAA’s Southwest Region Airports Division manager made the presentations. Solco’s staff inspects and certifies airports and administers federal airport development grants.

"These airports have contributed significantly to assuring the future growth, safety, and efficiency of the national air transportation system,” noted Ava L. Wilkerson, FAA Southwest Region administrator.

Year 2005 outstanding airports are: (two in Arkansas) Fayetteville Municipal Airport (Drake Field) in Fayetteville, and Walnut Ridge Regional Airport (Airport Partner Honorable Mention) in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas; Lafayette Regional Airport in Lafayette, Louisiana; Los Alamos Airport in Los Alamos, New Mexico; Stillwater Regional Airport, Oklahoma; and Houston Airport System in Houston, Texas.

The Airport Safety Award for 2005 went to the Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport in Temple. The award recognizes one airport in the region for outstanding contribution and commitment to aviation safety. The airport’s performance in support of aviation safety initiatives significantly contributed to assuring the efficiency of safe travel in the Southwest Region and the National Airspace System.

The regional Environmental Achievement Award went to the El Paso International Airport, Texas. The award recognizes environmental stewardship in the airports industry. The award acknowledges those in the industry who have gone above and beyond the requirements of today’s environmental regulations. It recognizes those who have truly taken to heart concepts embracing the protection, conservation, and enhancement of our environment.
