(1:50)

The NextGen International Office, a division of the Interagency Planning Office coordinates and shares information with global partners in support of seamless interoperability and harmonization. The international office also assists in the safety and efficiency of global air traffic management (ATM) systems by leveraging FAA experience in developing and implementing NextGen.

The FAA, in partnership with industry, leads the world by ensuring that NextGen capabilities are interconnected globally through internationally accepted standards of:

  • Data exchange
  • Uniform operations and technical development
  • Procedures
  • Avionics capabilities
  • Agreed-upon timelines
  • Implementation methodologies
  • Personnel skills, training, and expertise needed to harmonize implementation

The FAA and its international partners work through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to develop a globally connected ATM system. ICAO, the aviation technical body of the United Nations, provides a forum for 192 member states to adopt and implement international aviation standards. Most of the work conducted in ICAO is through expert panels. The FAA provides subject-matter experts to all panels considered necessary for international harmonization. NextGen staff members are leading the revision of the global ATM roadmap as described by the ICAO Global Air Navigation Plan, which defines the direction of world aviation systems for the next 20 years.

The NextGen International Office also works bilaterally with key international partners and regional groups to collaborate on relevant ATM modernization issues. The FAA has international agreements with the European Union, Japan, and Singapore for joint research and development of future air traffic systems. The NextGen International Office also participates with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and the Department of Commerce on their cooperation with Brazil, China, and India to ensure our aviation standards are accepted globally.
