Section 1. INTRODUCTION
- PURPOSE OF THIS ORDER
 
This order contains the approved word and phrase contractions used by personnel of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It is also used by other agencies that provide air traffic control, communications, weather, charting, and associated services.
- AUDIENCE
 
This order applies to all FAA personnel and other agencies using ATO directives. It is also used by the aviation public.

- WHAT THIS ORDER CANCELS
 
FAA Order JO 7340.2N, Contractions, effective May 16, 2024, and all changes to it, are canceled.
- EXPLANATION OF CHANGES
 
Changes, additions, and modifications (CAM) are indicated on page CAM-1-1.

- GENERAL NOTICES (GENOTS)
 
The FAA issues GENOTs that authorize, modify, or cancel call sign designator/telephony assignments and/or aircraft operator information. If there appears to be a conflict between published data in this order and GENOT data, use the GENOT data. Then make pen and ink changes to reflect the GENOT data. ICAO does not issue GENOTs.
- REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES FOR AIRCRAFT CALL SIGN DESIGNATORS AND ASSOCIATED TELEPHONIES
 
Requirements and procedures for ICAO three-letter designators (3LD), U.S. special call sign designators, local call signs, and associated telephonies can be found in FAA Order JO 7610.12, Assignment and Authorization of Call Sign Designators and Associated Telephonies, as well as Advisory Circular 120-26, Assignment of Aircraft Call Signs and Associated Telephonies.
