ATLANTIC COAST ROUTES (NEC ACR) IMPLEMENTATION

APRIL 20, 2023

SUMMARY

The FAA will implement numerous new routes along the east coast of the United States in ZBW, ZNY, ZDC, ZJX and ZMA airspace on April 20, 2023.

The NOTAM’d portion of the following twenty Q-Routes will be implemented: Q60, Q64, Q85, Q87, Q97, Q99, Q101, Q107, Q109, Q111, Q113, Q117, Q131, Q133, Q135, Q141, Q167, Q409, Q445, and Q481. The existing Not Authorized (NA) NOTAMs against the above routes will be cancelled.

The following seven Jet Routes will be cancelled in their entirety: J37, J55, J79, J121, J174, J191, and J209.

The following four Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) will also be amended and implemented. The amendments include new transitions for traffic arriving from the south.

KPHL JIIMS FOUR ARRIVAL (RNAV) - ZJAAY transition added

KPHL PAATS FOUR ARRIVAL (RNAV) - BBDOL transition added

KEWR PHLBO FOUR ARRIVAL (RNAV) - QUART transition added

KTEB JAIKE FOUR ARRIVAL (RNAV) – SWNGR transition added

PREFERRED IFR ROUTES

The Preferred IFR Routes for over 1200 city pairs involving the above ARTCCs are being amended for the April 20, 2023 implementation.

Routes to/from the following 100 airports will be affected most:

The Preferred IFR Routes will be available on April 20, 2023 on the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center’s (ATCSCC) website at NFDC Preferred Routes Database (faa.gov).

A preview of the routes are currently available to subscribers at Preview April 20, 2023 Preferred Route / Tower Enroute Control (TEC) Routes (PFR). Utilize the PFR_BASE.csv file.

The following NAVAIDs and fixes have been removed from High Altitude Preferred IFR Routes. Please do not file these in high altitude flight plans.

HIGH ALTITUDE PREFERRED DIRECTION (HPD) ROUTES

High Altitude Preferred Direction (HPD) routes will be established as follows. ATC request your cooperation in filing flight plans that adhere to the preferred direction, however ATC may clear traffic in either direction as needed.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM COMMAND CENTER (ATCSCC)

ROUTE ADVISORIES

The ATCSCC will issue Route Advisories beginning on April 20, 2023 to establish the new permanent Preferred IFR Routes. The routes in these Route Advisories will mirror the Preferred IFR Routes and will be in effect for 7-14 days if needed. Please continue to file these routes when the Route Advisories are cancelled. The ATCSCC Route Advisories will be available on the FAA’s ATCSCC website at Advisory Database Form (faa.gov).

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT INITIATIVES

Traffic Management Initiatives will be utilized to provide controllers and air crews the opportunity to become accustomed to the new routes and changes to the airspace while ensuring a safe operation. These initiatives are intended to reduce complexity and redistribute traffic volume across all available airspace and could include miles-in-trail restrictions, altitude restrictions, ground stops, ground delay programs, and reroutes. Operators are highly encouraged to file Deep Ocean routes, if properly equipped, as filing these may reduce the likelihood of delays.

Additional Route Advisories to reroute traffic from ZBW and Florida (both directions) are possible to maintain acceptable traffic levels in the eastern portions of ZDC airspace.

Flights to/from the WEST coast of Florida using J6, may be similar to the current NE TO FLORIDA VIA J6 playbook

Flights to/from the EAST coast of Florida using J48 (includes MCO and satellites), may be similar to the current NE TO FLORIDA VIA J48 1 playbook

The ATCSCC Route Advisories will be available on the FAA’s ATCSCC website at Advisory Database Form (faa.gov).

GO-TEAM

The FAA will utilize a virtual Go-Team in support of this implementation April 20, 2023 through April 23, 2023. An open conference bridge will be staffed by subject matter experts 0600-1800 EDT daily. Operators are highly encouraged to utilize the conference bridge to report issues and obtain resolution. Status reports will be conducted at 0700, 1000, and 1400 EDT.
