Section 2. Intercept Training Activities

8-2-1. AREA OF OPERATION

Intercept training activities, except for NORAD/USINDOPACOM air defense exercises/evaluations, must be ­conducted under the following conditions:

  1. Within Restricted Areas, Warning Areas, Military Operations Areas, and at FL 180 and above in ATCAAs ­within the United States and its territorial waters.
  2. Participating aircraft must display transponder codes as assigned by ATC at all times unless otherwise ­coordinated.
  3. Transponder-off operations must not be conducted except as authorized in an FAA Headquarters approved ­exemption to 14 CFR section 91.215.

8-2-2. RADAR SURVEILLANCE

  1. Intercept training activities must be conducted under the surveillance of an MRU including AWACS ­aircraft to the extent such coverage or capability is available.
  2. When MRU capability does not exist, ATC radar facilities should provide radar surveillance when staffing ­and workload permits. The details of radar coverage areas and the services to be provided will be included in ­a letter of agreement between the appropriate ATC facilities and military operational units.
