FAASI Soldotna CTAF
From late 2022 through 2023, the FAA Alaskan Region collaborated with stakeholders to establish Soldotna Area Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF). The Soldotna Area CTAF places a large portion of the Kenai Peninsula, including 34 public and private airports, on a single frequency of 122.5 MHz as of January 25, 2024. A common traffic advisory frequency allows pilots to communicate with each other at airports and landing areas without an active control tower. Pilots will share positions, intentions, and altitude to coordinate movements and ensure safe operations.
A working group under the FAA Alaska Aviation Safety Initiative was formed in response to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommendations addressing midair collisions and the use of multiple frequencies for position reporting. The working group detailed geographical boundaries, terrain, airports, air traffic, and voluntary VFR checkpoints to enhance flight safety and situational awareness for pilots.
Importantly, this initiative does not constitute a regulatory change, as operational communication requirements remain consistent across the region. The joint efforts between the FAA and local flying community stakeholders underscore a shared commitment to advancing flight safety in the region in accordance with the FAA Alaska Aviation Safety Initiative.
