As we commemorate America’s 250th birthday, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the history of aviation in the United States – a journey marked by innovation, determination, and remarkable achievement. 

The story of aviation in America actually began in 1793 with a balloon flight by Jean-Pierre Blanchard. In the late 19th century, bold experimentation by pioneers like Samuel Pierpoint Langley, John Joseph Montgomery, Octave Chanute and Augustus Moore Herring advanced the goal of powered flight, which was first achieved by the Wright Brothers in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This groundbreaking moment set the stage for the rapid development of aviation technology and the development of civil air travel. 

Throughout the decades, American aviation has been characterized by significant milestones, including Charles Lindbergh's historic solo transatlantic flight in 1927, which captured the world's imagination and advanced the possibilities of long-distance air travel. The establishment of airmail routes in the 1920s and 1930s further demonstrated aviation's potential to connect people and places like never before.

World War II catalyzed technological advancements and the expansion of the aviation industry, as aircraft became crucial to military strategy and logistics. The post-war era saw the emergence of commercial aviation, making air travel accessible to the general public and transforming the way Americans traveled and conducted business.

The latter half of the 20th century witnessed the dawn of the jet age, the development of supersonic flight, and the space race, with NASA leading the charge into space exploration. These achievements not only showcased American ingenuity but also inspired generations to reach for the stars.

As we celebrate 250 years of American history, aviation remains a testament to the nation's spirit of innovation and exploration. From the earliest flights at Kitty Hawk to the cutting-edge technologies of today, the legacy of American aviation continues to soar, propelling us into a future filled with possibilities.

As we gather to celebrate America250, ensuring the safety and security of all attendees is our top priority. Please be aware that operating drones near any America250 event is strictly illegal, highly dangerous, and carries severe consequences. For the safety of everyone celebrating, we urge you to leave your drone at home.

  • Flying drones near these events is illegal and dangerous.
  • Violators will be prosecuted and penalties are severe.
  • Leave your drone at home.
  • There will be severe consequences for reckless, careless, or criminal drone use, including fines upwards of $100,000, criminal charges, incarceration, and the confiscation of your drone.
  • See a drone breaking the rules? Report it to 911, on-site law enforcement, or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI

In partnership with the FBI, the FAA has created a toolkit that provides messaging, graphics and other resources to help communicate that large America250 events will have strict No Drone Zones.
